Question 1: Describe a meaningful learning experience that started with a story that you heard. What made it impactful for you? What senses did it appeal to? Did you recognize any of the storytelling techniques reviewed this week?

I once went to a workshop where the speaker started out by telling a gripping tale of how they went from growing up in a small village to becoming a profitable business owner. The narrative has its share of highs and lows, victories and setbacks. The speaker’s ability to vividly describe characters and conjure up powerful visual pictures that appealed to my senses of sight and emotion was what gave it its impact. I could almost sense their happiness when they succeeded and their stress when they struggled.

The speaker employed various narrative strategies from the reading in retrospect. They left a lasting impression by drawing the audience into their story, offering sensory details, and building on many S.T.A.R. moments. I was interested the entire time since the utilization of personal tales made the experience relatable and produced a tense environment.

Question 2: In the reading this week, 7 Storytelling Techniques Used by the Most Inspiring TED Presenters, which of the presenters did you find most compelling? What technique(s) did you recognize in their talk?

The 12-year-old Masai kid Richard Turere’s story captivated me greatly. He had a remarkable capacity to transport the listener to his world and convey a personal tale of overcoming hardship. He made good use of images to enhance his narrative rather than restate what had already been said.

By giving the viewer enough information to visualize him and his life, Richard also helped his characters come to life, especially himself. He left the audience with a thought-provoking lesson after motivating them with his inventiveness and tenacity. The storytelling strategies covered in the reading, like drawing the audience into the narrative, sharing a personal experience, and concluding with a motivational statement, were all expertly shown in this presentation.

Question 3: What storytelling techniques have you used instinctively, and which ones require more work for you? Which techniques will you focus on moving forward?

When I think back on my previous presentations, I see that I have a natural tendency to use personal anecdotes to engage my audience. By talking about my experiences, I think we can build a stronger connection and make the material more relatable. To make my presentations more interesting and memorable, I admit that I need to concentrate on establishing suspense and a S.T.A.R. moment.

Going forward, I want to put more emphasis on showing rather than explaining and on giving characters life. I aim to arouse strong feelings and vivid visuals in my audience so they can totally immerse themselves in the narrative. Additionally, I want to try out a few alternative approaches to building suspense, such as tinkering with the presentation’s format or adding shocking components for audiences.
